As rumored, today Nokia announced the release of Windows Phone 7.8 for various devices including the Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800 and 900. Owners of these handsets won’t be making the leap to Windows Phone 8 — a fact they’re all too familiar with by now — but this software update brings at least some of the new functionality found in the latest crop of Windows Phones to Nokia’s older phones. Most of the new features are visual: you’ll now be able to resize Live Tiles on your home screen and choose from a number of themes carried over from Windows Phone 8. Beginning today and lasting over the next few weeks, users receive a promot about the update’s availability. From there, you just need to plug in your Lumia and boot up the Zune desktop software to get going.
