TV Shows

We may be living in a golden age of TV, but panning through all the dross to find that gold can be time-consuming and tedious. For every much-discussed hit like Severance, House of the Dragon, and The Bear, there are dozens of new original shows that barely tip the cultural needle. And with so many new streaming services competing with HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and Disney Plus, it’s impossible to keep up with everything new to view. But The Verge’s TV section is ready to help. Our news, reviews, and interviews help you find the next Stranger Things or Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in time to keep up with the cultural conversation. And our essays and analysis invite you to consider the deeper context of what you’re watching.

Stranger Things fandom drama strikes one more time.

In an Elite Daily interview ahead of this week’s penultimate release, series star Gaten Matarazzo referenced the “Stonathan” pairing and said he liked the idea behind “Steddie” fanfics.

But saying the “Byler” shipping between Will and Mike, was “very funny. I see them as just very good friends,” seemingly went too far for some, with social media posts targeting the interviewer, and some even claiming it was a fake quote.

“...like e pluribus unum.”

Once you’ve watched the Pluribus (or, actually, Plur1bus?) season finale and read through Andrew Webster’s review, it’s time for Apple TV’s 20-minute behind-the-scenes video with Vince Gilligan & Co.

Monsters inc.

Apple just announced that, in addition to the upcoming second season, a spinoff of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is also on the way that will star young Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell). Here’s the logline:

The spinoff series will follow the story of Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative who in 1984 went on a secret mission behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop the Soviets from unleashing a horrific new Titan big enough to destroy the U.S. and turn the tide of the Cold War.

Google Earth needs a spoiler warning.

Its historic satellite imagery just happened to catch the set of Apple TV’s Pluribus during filming, revealing a big moment from the show’s seventh episode, which aired last week. Here’s a shot of the cul de sac set caught by Google during construction, but click through for a later photo that spoils the show.

Stranger Things 5 Volume 2 is turning the heat up(side down).

As hokey as the first few episodes of Stranger Things’ final season felt, the new trailer for the next batch dropping on December 25th makes it seem like the series is stepping its game up as it races towards the finish line.

HBO Max has big 2026 plans.

We don’t even know who will own HBO Max this time next year, but the streamer is putting on a good face with this sizzle reel of new footage from upcoming seasons of House of the Dragon, Euphoria, Dune: Prophecy and Lanterns — all of which are coming in 2026.

Netflix may be the frontrunner now, but the war for Warner Bros. could end in a number of different ways.

It’s Toph’s time now.

The new teaser for season 2 of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series is full of iffy-looking action, but it gives us a very promising look at Miya Cech’s take on Toph.

Welcome to the big leagues, Netflix

WB has a checkered history of acquisitions, but joining forces with Netflix would elevate it to a new level of prominence.

Amazon’s terrible AI anime dubs are even scummier than you think.

It was bad enough that Amazon thought people would enjoy English / Spanish versions of Banana Fish and No Game, No Life Zero that were shoddily dubbed using generative AI. But Anime News Network reports that the streamer didn’t even bother to ask the original studios behind those series if that kind of dubbing was ok.

Beignet Blanc knows whodunnit on Sesame Street.

Rian Johnson might not be open to a Knives Out feature starring The Muppets, but he seems to have given his blessing to Netflix’s new Sesame Street short about detective Beignet Blanc investigating the disappearance of Cookie Monster’s triple berry pie.

Welcome to Hawkins.

Stranger Things is back for (the first part of) its final season, but given the lengthy period between episodes, there’s a good chance you have some catching up to do. To that end, Netflix released this very handy recap covering season 4, which wrapped up way back in 2022.

The first chunk of the show’s fifth and final season moves a little too fast for its own good.

A new Star Search is born.

This trailer for Netflix’s upcoming Star Search revival is really just a list all the celebrities like Beyoncé, Usher, and Britney Spears who were discovered on the original series. But it’s also the streamer’s way of announcing that Anthony Anderson will host the new live show when it premieres on January 13th.

Stranger Things x Bike Bus.

Stranger Things, a show that ostensibly is riff on the “kids on bikes” adventures from the 1980s, recently held a promotional event where fans rode bikes along a car-free street to celebrate the final season. But no “kids on bikes” event would be complete without Coach Balto, the founder of Bike Bus World, who also helped inspire my own bike bus journey. I’m excited to see him continuing the spread the word about street safety and childhood independence in the Upside Down.
