Netflix

With nearly 150 million subscribers around the world, Netflix has a commanding lead in the streaming wars. But it’s also facing heavy competition from deep-pocketed conglomerates like Disney, Apple, and AT&T, and an ongoing wave of narrow, targeted streaming sites like CBS All Access and DC Universe, which can draw on popular existing franchises for original content. As fewer companies are willing to license out their films and shows to other streaming sites, Netflix is pouring billions of dollars annually into its own original content. Follow along with The Verge as we look at Netflix’s new films and shows, its evolving strategies against new entrants in the market, and how it’s leveraging its technological and marketing lead.

Heels, nails, blade, the island.

Fortnite wasted no time cooking up its KPop Demon Hunters collaboration that will see the Huntr/x girls squadding up to slay monsters in a movie-inspired version of the game’s Horde Rush mode running from October 2nd to November 1st. Naturally, Rumi, Zoey, and Mira skins will also be coming to the Fortnite Shop.

We’re getting a new trailer for the Netflix film tomorrow, and as a teaser the streamer put out this poster that provides the best look yet at Jacob Elordi as the creature.

Kathryn Bigelow’s latest thriller.

The Netflix film has an intriguing premise: “When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond.” The trailer is mostly people looking very emotional in control rooms, and yet it’s still pretty intense. It streams on October 24th.

Netflix’s chief product officer Eunice Kim is leaving the company.

Kim, who recently oversaw the launch of its new TV app, became CPO in 2023 when Greg Peters was promoted to co-CEO. Bloomberg reports Netflix didn’t give a reason for her exit; however, CTO Elizabeth Stone will fill the role for now.

In a statement, she noted the apps’ recent changes:

We also redesigned the product experience, expanding beyond VOD to support a much broader entertainment offering –including live events, ads, and games.

The bells are tolling for Benoit Blanc.

Nobody wants to fess up to murder in the latest teaser for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, but Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc knows that there’s a killer in his midst — one whose identity will be revealed when the film hits theaters on November 26th.

Knives Out, in theaters.

Just like with Glass Onion, Netflix is giving Wake Up Dead Man a brief theatrical run before it starts streaming in December. The movie is also premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival later this week, and I’ll be on hand to check it out. Stay tuned.

KPop Demon Hunters was this year’s biggest surprise, but can Netflix do it again?

The streamer has already ordered a sequel, but part of what made the first movie a sleeper hit was that no one saw it coming.

The Duffer Brothers are joining the Paramount family.

The Duffer Brothers will still be able to oversee their in-development Netflix projects when their current contract with the streamer is finished next year. But Deadline reports that the Stranger Things creators are jumping ship to Paramount, a Skydance Corporation, after signing a new production deal.

The new show from BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg hasn’t actually premiered yet — it starts streaming on August 22nd — but Netflix has already confirmed it’ll be getting a second season. In the meantime, you can check out this new trailer that sets up the time-jumping family story.

A Sundance standout is coming to Netflix.

Train Dreams, which was one of my favorite films at the festival this year, is streaming on November 21st, and will also be coming to select theaters this fall. It’s an understated and heartbreaking movie about coping with loss and change, telling a story that spans a single lifetime and is buoyed by some incredible performances from Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones. You can get a feel for it in the new trailer below.

Netflix says people like its new TV interface.

“Early results are encouraging, outperforming pre-launch testing and demonstrating strong member interest in the new features,” Netflix says in its second-quarter letter to shareholders. About 50 percent of members have used it.

The new UI started rolling out globally in May, and it features a Home tab with a huge banner front and center that highlights something to watch.

Netflix is losing its edge.

Nielsen data compiled by the Entertainment Strategy Guy newsletter shows that Netflix’s original titles have gradually been losing ground to original content from rival streaming platforms, such as Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV Plus, and Paramount Plus.

While Netflix owned 80 percent of the weekly top ten charts in 2021, that’s now down to 52 percent this year so far — and Disney Plus isn’t doing so hot either.

A chart showing that Netflix originals content has fallen in weekely charts by 28 percent since 2021.
Disney Plus originals are also falling behind, but those weren’t dominating the charts like content from Netflix.

Beyond just the “coming soon” Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, this Anime Expo 2025 teaser from Netflix highlights other animated releases that are either new or continuing, like Sakamoto Days, Beastars, Leviathan, and Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, and the upcoming “cozy MMO,” Spirit Crossing, that’s part of its new plan for games.
