SEC proposal would end quarterly earnings reports requirements and switch to every six months.

Every three months, we get another round of financial updates from publicly traded companies like Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon, but the Trump Administration is pushing to lower that requirement to every six months. The argument in favor of changing it claims that quarterly reporting is a burden on small or medium-sized companies, despite the risks of weaker monitoring, as Reuters and WSJ report.

    Brockman talks Dota 2.

Brockman said that focusing on the game was his idea, in a project worked on by several people, later explaining that DeepMind was working on something similar with a different game but “had nothing” yet, contributing to their decision not to open-source the technology.

The most notable part of the project, however, is how its development led to understanding that increasing the scale of their compute could rapidly advance the AI capabilities. “…the first Dota bot Jakub Pachocki trained was on 16 CPU cores … every week they had 2x the CPU cores, and the AI got 2x better. There was no limit. We kept increasing the scale, thinking this would peter out, but it never did,” said Brockman.

Media Matters says it won a “complete and total victory” over the FTC.

While Elon Musk has settled his Twitter case with the SEC, nonprofit watchdog group Media Matters says the FTC has ended a “retaliatory” investigation about whether it worked with advertisers to boycott Elon Musk’s website:

…the FTC ultimately submitted to a legally binding settlement agreement with Media Matters, withdrawing its blatantly retaliatory demands and committing to forgo ever reissuing or issuing a substantially similar Civil Investigative Demand to Media Matters.

The FTC also stated — in writing — that Media Matters is not the target of any investigation and that any similar future litigation would occur in D.C.

The White House reportedly is working on an executive order about AI oversight and access.

The Trump Administration’s rollback of AI safety regulations may not extend to itself, as the NYT reports that after the launch of Mythos, officials are concerned about “…political repercussions if a devastating A.I.-enabled cyberattack were to occur,” said sources.

Apparently, some officials want government first access to new AI models without blocking their release, but any plans may come from a working group of industry and government officials that has yet to be created.

GameStop makes a $56 billion offer to buy eBay, doesn’t explain where the money will come from.

Former Chewy and current GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen says he plans to somehow create a competitor to Amazon “...worth hundreds of billions of dollars.”
GameStop said it has a commitment letter from TD Bank for $20 billion in debt financing, but where the rest will come from is unclear, with WSJ sources citing Middle Eastern sovereign-wealth funds as a possibility.

DOJ assault on the NFL could end the Packers as we know them.

A Milwaukee news report focuses on fan response to the Packers sounding the alarm over a reported antitrust investigation into the NFL’s broadcast deals with streaming platforms, which happened to pop up around the same time as Florida’s push against the “Rooney Rule” for coach hiring. FCC chair Brendan Carr said the FCC might investigate, too, but the team says the current profit-sharing setup is what makes a small market like Green Bay viable.

    Ask Jeeves is dead.

In an era when Liz Lopatto is asking about the “Ask Jeeves-ification of online search” via AI chatbots, the originator just faded away. Its owner, IAC, says that as of May 1st, 2026, “we have made the decision to discontinue our search business, which includes Ask.com.”

Every great search must come to an end. As IAC continues to sharpen its focus, we have made the decision to discontinue our search business, which includes Ask.com. After 25 years of answering the world’s questions, Ask.com officially closed on May 1, 2026.
