Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad Roommate

How a nightmare housing situation drove a bleeding-heart progressive to home surveillance, eviction law, and calling in law enforcement.

The good kind of penis surgery.

Turns out one of Trump’s top infectious disease officials is a former penile implant specialist, which is odd considering some of the administration’s other policy positions.

Ada:

I’m surprised that a Trump official has such an interest in gender affirming care.

I can’t find anyone whose Trump phone has shipped.

The T1 Phone was supposed to start shipping last week. But our review units haven’t budged, and I’ve so far failed to find anyone online claiming their phone has shipped either. Maybe they’ve had to delay the launch to fix the flag.

Xiaomi’s 17T phones get a launch date.

The cheaper, performance-focused follow-ups to the Xiaomi 17 series launches on May 28th. We don’t know exactly where yet, but expect an international launch. The T phones usually drop a couple camera specs in exchange for bigger batteries and cheaper prices than the main flagship line.

This Gimp reskin sure looks familiar…

Open source tech creators Diolinux have released a free patch that rearranges the Gimp UI to resemble Adobe’s Photoshop editing software. That familiar layout should make it easier for long-time Photoshop users to make the switch. Installation instructions for Linux and Windows are available on GitHub.

Anything that makes Gimp less confusing is welcome in this house.

Shein is reportedly acquiring Everlane.

The deal is valued at $100 million according to Puck, and would add a US-based brand to Shein’s portfolio after President Trump ended the de minimis exemption on cheap imported goods. If true, that’s a notable pivot for Everlane, which until now has built its brand around sustainability.

Can the MacBook Neo cut it as a gaming machine?

Digital Foundry put the $600 laptop through some benchmarks and came away underwhelmed. It was possible to get a playable 30FPS out of Control and Death Stranding with quality dialed back. But, more demanding titles required dropping to 720p or, in the case of Cyberpunk 2077, refused to play at all.

Six million vapes are being thrown out every week in the UK, causing headaches and fires.

Single-use vapes were banned last year, but that hasn’t stopped the deluge. Six million vapes and vape pods are being thrown out there every week, and the sheer volume is proving impossible to keep up with. Plus, the lithium-ion batteries inside are causing fires. According to The Guardian:

Recycling them is not simple. Each bucket holds between 40 and 50 devices, and over the course of a shift, she gets through about half a bucket. Using a hammer, she has to smash each vape open, pry out the batteries and separate each component into a different container.

Seth Rogen says if you’re using AI to write, “you shouldn’t be a writer.“

During an interview for his new animated film Tangles, at Cannes, Rogen minced no words about his feelings on AI, calling it “stupid dog shit.” But perhaps more pointedly said that, if you’re using AI to write, just “go do something else,” because you’re not a writer.
