macOS

macOS is Apple’s operating system for the Mac. It has been around quite a long time, but in its current form it really started in 2001 with Mac OS X 10.1. It’s built on top of a UNIX core, which makes it very stable, versatile, and great for developers. It’s popular with creators too, as a good platform for video editing and photography. More recently, Apple has begun working to bring iOS apps to the Mac, which could change how MacBooks, iMacs, Mac Pros, and Mac Minis work for everybody.

Check out the latest apps being ‘Sherlocked’ by Apple.

TechCrunch has put together a list of features announced during WWDC that are already available on Apple devices via third-party services. That notably includes the new password app (1Password, LastPass), voice transcription (Otter, AudioPen), the ability to mirror iPhones on a Mac (Bezel), and more.

While Apple has to keep up with its competitors, “Sherlocking” developers at WWDC is a long-running and well-documented tradition.

The new versions of iOS and macOS will let you rotate your Wi-Fi address to help reduce tracking.

Here’s how Apple describes the feature, per MacRumors:

A rotating Wi-Fi address helps reduce tracking by changing your Wi-Fi address at various times. Tracking can happen when your address always appears the same to other devices and people using the same network as you.

It’s coming to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

Is this the most important Vision Pro update?

From Apple’s post-WWDC 2024 keynote release (emphasis mine):

visionOS 2 also adds mouse support for additional workflow options, and Vision Pro will now reveal the user’s physical Magic Keyboard — even when they are fully immersed in an Environment or app.

I can’t wait to see my keyboard floating in the clouds like Falkor from The Neverending Story when visionOS 2 comes out this fall.

Apple is selling refurbished M3 MacBook Airs now.

Refurbished models start at $929 for the base 13-inch one. That’s cheaper than most retailers’ deals on new MacBook Airs, and Apple’s refurbished models tend to feel every bit as new as an unused one, as MacRumors noted.

Read our March review for Joanna Nelius’ thoughts on its key upgrades, two external display support (versus one in older Apple silicon Airs), and faster base storage.

Apple’s WWDC keynote is June 10th at 1PM ET.

Will we see new hardware, or will all the news have something to do with AI? Greg Joswiak isn’t telling.

Before the event starts, however, Apple released student-targeted Mac ads promoting the power and long battery life of M-series MacBooks. They’re not responding to or even acknowledging the competition’s attacks (yet), but if Qualcomm’s promises hold up, then maybe that will change.

Some of Logic Pro’s AI features will work on Macs, too.

Apple focused on the iPad for its pro audio software release today, but the Mac got some love, too.

Provided you’re running an Apple silicon Mac, both Stem Splitter, which tasks AI with separating drums, bass, vocals, and “other instruments” into four parts, and its AI-powered ChromaGlow reverb effect will be available in the May 13th update.

The best iMac, now with M2.

The limited-edition DockLite G4, from Australian DIY tech company Juicy Crumb, gives the 20-inch iMac G4 an HDMI port. So YouTuber Action Retro decided to combine that with the guts of an M2 Mac Mini to turn his 20-incher into a modern machine.

Shame that the DockLite G4 doesn’t work with other versions of the prettiest iMac ever made, because a used 20-inch ain’t cheap.

Redoing math in the macOS Calculator app is violence.

That’s why I’m keen on this rumor from AppleInsider that says macOS 15 will add a sidebar that gives you an overview of previous calculations. The app will supposedly look more like the iOS version and get unit conversions too.

Good! Sign me up for anything that makes math less painful.

Apple’s latest macOS Sonoma‌ update comes with an explanation for recent security fixes.

The macOS Sonoma‌‌‌ 14.4‌.1 / Ventura 13.6.6 update released today fixes bugs affecting Java apps and Audio Unit plug-ins for professional music apps. It also fixes a problem where USB hubs connected to external displays weren’t recognized.

It also fixes the same security flaw that was addressed in updates to iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS last week. Image bugs identified by Google Project Zero could have led to code execution, so you should probably update ASAP.

The “Macintosh Studio” almost makes me want an iPad Mini.

Product designer Scott Yu-Jan had the idea to marry an iPad Mini to a Mac Studio inside a 3D-printed approximation of an original Macintosh. It’s not just a fun gimmick — this thing looks delightfully practical, too.

Oracle warns that macOS Sonoma 14.4 on Apple Silicon breaks Java.

Product management director Aurelio Garcia-Ribeyro wrote on Friday that “all Java versions from Java 8 to the early access builds of JDK 22” are affected by a bug that causes the Java process to terminate unexpectedly.

Oracle’s issue tracker that lists the bug as open and unresolved says Macs on 64-bit Intel hardware are unaffected. The company recommends users wait to update.

More accessibility features could be on the way with iOS 18 and macOS 15.

MacRumors’ sources say the new OS releases will include the ability to create custom voice shortcuts for accessibility features like VoiceOver and Voice Control. Live Speech could also get user-created categories for you to organize the phrases spoken by the text-to-speech feature. MacRumors also says that Apple is exploring using eye-tracking for accessibility, although it’s unclear how far along those plans are.

The macOS Sonoma 14.4 update is here, bringing new emoji and transcripts in Apple Podcasts.

Apple released the fourth major update to macOS Sonoma‌ today. It includes the latest crop of new emoji, including a phoenix, a lime, a brown mushroom (to go with its red cap counterpart), and more.

It also brings searchable, auto-generated transcripts to Apple Podcasts. An update to Messages for Business will let users opt-in to notifications about flights, fraud alerts, order statuses, and more.

Apple’s visionOS update that could make Persona avatars better-looking is almost here.

The visionOS 1.1 release candidate that’s now available to developers includes some upgrades to the Personas avatars, such as improved rendering of eyes, mouth representation, and hair and makeup appearance.

MacRumors points out that this release also has updates for the virtual keyboard, Mac Virtual Display, mobile device management, and more. With the iOS 17.4 update close to a public launch, Apple also put out release candidates for tvOS, macOS, watchOS, and Xcode.

Look at this bonkers, beautiful Mac-iPad hybrid.

Leave it to Federico Viticci and MacStories to go super, super deep on what it takes to smash together an iPad and a Mac into “The MacPad,” a beautiful mess of a touchscreen laptop. Building — and using — this setup is not for the faint of heart, and it looks totally ridiculous. But I can’t help myself. I want one.

Apple tells its support staff not to shoot from the hip about sideloading.

Apple is preparing to release iOS 17.4 soon with many changes, including those meant to comply, to some degree at least, with Europe’s Digital Markets Act.

According to Bloomberg today, the company has told support staff not to engage with customers about whether or not the iPhone will get changes like third-party app stores outside of the EU.
