macOS

macOS is Apple’s operating system for the Mac. It has been around quite a long time, but in its current form it really started in 2001 with Mac OS X 10.1. It’s built on top of a UNIX core, which makes it very stable, versatile, and great for developers. It’s popular with creators too, as a good platform for video editing and photography. More recently, Apple has begun working to bring iOS apps to the Mac, which could change how MacBooks, iMacs, Mac Pros, and Mac Minis work for everybody.

Nominative determinism.

Look, I haven’t tried the dev beta of macOS 27 Golden Gate yet, and by all accounts it’s got some good improvements. But with that name, you’re just asking for trouble.

Researchers used Mythos to crack macOS.

Researchers at the security firm Calif say they used Anthropic’s cybersecurity AI to create a privilege escalation exploit, the Wall Street Journal reports:

Last September, Apple said it leveraged its hardware and operating system expertise into a technology called Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE), which it described as “the culmination of an unprecedented design and engineering effort, spanning half a decade.” With Claude, building the code that exploited the two MacOS bugs took five days, Calif says.

Apple axes more Mac Mini and Studio models.

After cutting the Mac Mini’s base model, Apple is now also nixing its 32GB and 64GB RAM options, along with the 256GB RAM version of the Mac Studio. RAM prices are likely to blame, not helped by AI-driven demand for the two small Macs: both computers currently have weeks-long shipping estimates from Apple’s online store.

The release candidates for iOS 26.5 and macOS 26.5 are rolling out to developers.

Apple Maps is expected to get a new Suggested Places feature and ads in iOS 26.5, while users in the EU could receive interoperability features, including the ability to receive notifications from a third-party smartwatch. Apple is also launching release candidates for iPadOS, tvOS, and visionOS, which are typically the last updates before a wider rollout.

The Mac is in good hands in Apple’s post-Cook era

After promoting Johny Srouji, I expect Apple to continue focusing on what makes its recent Macs so great: the chips.
