iOS

iOS is Apple’s operating system for the iPhone and iPad. It’s also the basis for tvOS for the Apple TV and watchOS for the Apple Watch. It’s even beginning to infiltrate the Mac in some ways. Apple has worked hard to keep iOS private and secure, and it has a huge ecosystem of apps via its official App Store. Some have argued that it is too locked down, but the trade-off is that it’s fast and stable for most users.

Apple sends spyware warnings to more iPhone users.

Dutch right-wing activist Eva Vlaardingerbroek reported receiving a message from Apple, saying the company “detected a targeted mercenary spyware attack against your iPhone.” The message adds, “This attack is likely targeting you specifically because of who you are or what you do.”

Italian journalist Ciro Pellegrino reported receiving a similar message that indicated Apple had sent warnings to victims in 100 countries, as reported by TechCrunch. Apple last warned users about a spyware attack in July 2024.

The Blue Prince iOS clone we found is gone.

Shortly after we published this story about an unofficial Blue Prince iOS app on the App Store, the app was removed. I’ve updated the story.

You should play the game on the platforms it’s actually available on, by the way: Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox.

Volvo’s EX30 is getting Apple Car Key support.

The automaker’s bigger EX90 EV got CarKey last year, and now Volvo is adding it to the smaller EX30. Volvo’s software rollout on the EX90 has been buggy, with features like CarPlay arriving slowly and owners complaining that their digital keys don’t work.

Dropbox’s app finally supports a feature introduced on the iPhone 6S.

The iOS and iPadOS versions of Dropbox’s mobile app were updated this week with support for Live Photos which was first introduced on the iPhone 6S and iOS 9 in 2015, as spotted by 9to5Mac.

As with Apple’s Photos app, you can press and hold on a Live Photo in Dropbox to play the short video. You can also convert Live Photos to still images and back again, and convert HEIC Live Photos to JPEGs.

That’s according to 9to5Mac, which spotted code in the latest iOS 18.4 developer beta suggesting the Home app is dropping support for the older version.

The iOS 18.4 developer beta gives Shortcuts much more to do.

9to5Mac spotted that iOS Shortcuts in today’s beta release now offers actions to change settings in iOS apps, including Safari, Maps, and Voice Memos. The outlet guesses it’s in preparation for Apple’s coming Siri upgrade that lets it perform tasks for you, both in and across apps.

New options include turning on “Avoid Hills” for Apple Maps cycling directions or setting the recording quality of Voice Memos.
