Chelsea Manning has ended the hunger strike she began September 9th after the US military agreed to let her receive gender reassignment surgery, according to her lawyers. “I am unendingly relieved that the military is finally doing the right thing,” Manning said in a statement. “I applaud them for that. This is all that I wanted — for them to let me be me.”

Manning has been fighting to get treatment for her gender dysphoria more or less since she began serving her 35-year prison sentence, for leaking classified military documents, back in 2013. While she has won advances in some instances, including the ability to receive hormone therapy, the government continued to deny other requests. Surgery was recommended by her psychologist back in April, according to BuzzFeed News. "It is hard not to wonder why it has taken so long," Manning says.
It seems that a timeline has not been provided for when Manning will receive surgery. She is also still facing charges and the possibility of solitary confinement over her suicide attempt.
