The Supergirl TV show is coming to CBS in the 2015-2016 season

CBS has been bullish on the prospect of a Supergirl TV show, and today it pulled the trigger: Variety reports that the network has picked up the drama as part of its 2015-2016 season. Starring Whiplash’s Melissa Benoist as Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El (known as Kara Danvers to humanity), the show comes from executive producer Greg Berlanti. If you’re familiar with many of the DC shows on television right now, Berlanti’s name is going to sound pretty familiar; he’s also one of the creative forces between Arrow and The Flash.

The pilot for the series reportedly cost $14 million, with the show itself meeting up with Supergirl at the age of 24 when she decides to stop hiding her Kryptonian powers and don the mantle of a superhero. Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) also stars as Kara’s boss Cat Grant, with Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olson and David Harewood as the villain Hank Henshaw. According to Variety, there’s also going to be some familiar faces from the past in the mix as well, with Lois & Clark’s Dean Cain and Helen Slater — who played Supergirl in the 1984 feature film — also cast.
