Derek, the new mockumentary series from The Office creator Ricky Gervais, is headed to Netflix next month, and we’re now getting a look at the first trailer for US audiences. The show is set in a retirement home staffed by the title character (played by Gervais) and his friend Dougie, played by An Idiot Abroad’s Karl Pilkington. Judging from the 90-second clip it looks like Derek is a big departure from the cringe comedy of The Office and Extras; Channel 4 describes it as “a bittersweet comedy drama about a group of outsiders living on society’s margins.”
Ricky Gervais’ controversial mockumentary series ‘Derek’ arrives on Netflix next month

The show has drawn fire in the UK for its perceived portrayal of mental disability, but Gervais insists that Derek isn’t autistic, saying “if I say he is not meant to be he is not meant to be, it’s as simple as that.” The first six-episode season has already aired in full overseas, but Netflix subscribers will have to wait until September 12th for the US premiere.
