105-inch curved Ultra HD televisions announced by both Samsung and LG

The annual Consumer Electronics Show is just around the corner, which means it’s time for companies to show off some of the most extravagant — and least practical — televisions out there. LG has announced that at CES 2014 it’s going to be revealing a 105-inch curved Ultra HD television, what the company claims is the “largest curved TV ever made.” Not only will the behemoth feature a massive LCD panel with a resolution of 5120 x 2160, it will also utilize a 21:9 aspect ratio, which LG is billing as a “CinemaScope” screen. With that screen size, the 105UB9 will allow viewers to watch some films with reduced letterboxing, while also providing significant extra screen real estate for the television to display additional information without covering up the program itself.

“With a resolution of 11 million pixels, the 105-inch curved LCD panel is proof of our continued leadership in the next generation display market, offering exceptional world-class value to our customers,” LG Display’s Yong-kee Hwang said in a statement. Of course, just how much of a value that ends up being will depend largely on the price; we hope to learn more about that particular detail when we see the television for ourselves next month.

Update: LG and Samsung rarely allow each other to release a groundbreaking new TV alone, and this one’s no different — Samsung has followed up with an announcement that it, too, will be bringing a 105-inch curved UHD TV to CES. We’ll be sure to check out both in person.
